Be careful what you wish for

I distinctly remember a time in my life when I thought, “My ideal life would be one where I didn’t have to set an alarm.”

I was thinking about being able to sleep in, sleep until I woke up.

Unfortunately, I have the life I once, foolishly, wished for.  As if by some trickster genie in a bottle, I have gotten my wish and it’s not what I expected.

I rarely set my alarm clock anymore.  Instead, I get woken up 360 days a year by my kids.  Be careful what you wish for.

Today was one of the 5 days a year that I woke of my own accord, and that’s because my children, in a bizarre coincidence, both slept in this morning.  I woke around 7:45am shocked that it was an hour and 15 min later that my usual wake up kid-call.

Today a blogger that I read, Wendi, posted a link to a re-write of the Lorde song “Royals” by two sleepy parents.  It’s called “Rested” and it resonates with me.

I share it below for your commiseration.

Rested

Lyrics by Josh Stearns and Erica Carlson

I never set my alarm clock anymore
I wake up before the dawn, I get up early
And I’m not proud of my outfit
It’s three am
And the baby’s screaming

And every minute’s like diapers, Thomas, splashin’ in the bathtub
Juice stains, snack traps, screamin’ in the minivan
They don’t care, we can’t remember the last time we dreamed
But everybody’s like swaddles, white noise, sleeping with your baby
Warm milk, rocking, let them cry it out now
We don’t care, we haven’t slept in a couple years.

Bumble Bee Tuna

I first heard this song performed by Mephiskapheles while I was in high school.  It stuck with me, I sang it to Mabel, and now it’s one of her favorites.

Here’s Mabel’s version of the Bumble Bee Tuna Song- accompanied by an ACTUAL bee:

Mephiskapheles has nothing on Mabel.

Scientific sidenote:  There is a reason we’re not fretting about the bee and getting stung.  You can hear Mabel mention in the video that the bee has a white face.  That’s because it’s a male Carpenter Bee.  While the bee is definitely checking her out, male Carpenter Bees don’t have stingers and aren’t aggressive.  While it was annoying back in April that we couldn’t be out on the deck without being buzzed by that bee, since there was no danger of being stung, we just went with it and used it an opportunity to teach Mabel how to react around bees (ie don’t freak out and flail around like a maniac).

Love ballad of a geek.

My husband, Mac, is a connoisseur of games- video games, role playing games, board games, annoying iPhone games.  This song could have been written by him, for me.  You do not want to know the lengths to which I go to pry him from him games.

That said, his love is worth waiting for the save* point.

*In the interest of full disclosure, because it’s funny, and because it shows just how little I know about video games, I originally called it a “safe point” instead of “save point.”  Thankfully my husband corrected me.
